Green Technology Week in Review

It’s fall, and here in the northeast, green has been changing to red, gold and brown. But the technology that matters most is still green. Following are some of the top stories from this week in the world of green technology.

The telecom division of the Israeli-based MER Group (News - Alert) was selected to provide turnkey tower site solutions for two mobile operators in Mozambique. MER will design the sites, supply the towers, construct the sites, and design and implement the hybrid energy systems used in the African nation.


The factory-integrated, TUNet-compatible Itron CENTRON II meter is now available. Equipped with Tantalus communication modules, the meter is designed to allow utilities to immediately utilize real-time interval meter reading for residential electric customers. This meter also provides utilities with useful information such as voltage data and tamper detection.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN specialized agency for aviation, recently conducted a meeting attended by delegates representing 191 countries. After a rigorous meeting and discussions, delegates of different countries have come up with a resolution projecting the methods for tackling aviation’s climate change impact.

Smart energy management solutions are essential for every household and businesses to better manage their energy consumption. These solutions have only been available to high-income groups – until now. To overcome this problem, The Verizon Foundation has partnered with consumer-energy research organization Pecan Street Inc. to introduce energy management solutions for low-income groups. The new solution is aptly named the Smart Solutions for Affordable Housing program.

While LG might be better known amongst the general public for its consumer electronics devices, the company just announced that it would be formally pushing its energy solutions division forward. In doing so, the company hopes to make significant strides in the clean energy market by offering up a package that includes energy generation, storage and delivery. The company says that it is going to be showing off its clean energy package at the 22nd annual World Energy Congress, which takes place in South Korea, Oct. 13-17.

The University of Southampton is working on an international project that will provide a sustainable electricity to rural communities throughout Africa. The projects goal is to establish and implement replicable, off-grid electricity generation, based on a solar photovoltaic storage system, that will promote development in sub-Saharan Africa.

Leaders in the geothermal energy field met in Las Vegas recently and agreed that if geothermal is to even consider competing with solar and wind, they need to up their game. They expressed the need to focus on education, lobbying and cost-cutting if geothermal is to play a role in the renewables revolution.
