Kohl's Recognized with EPA 2013 Sustained Excellence in Green Power Award

Green practices are an increasingly important part of every business’s strategy, which is why green chambers of commerce and stakeholder engagement firms have become so popular. Kohl’s Department Stores has been doing an exceptional job at “greening” their processes, and they have been rewarded for their efforts: yesterday, the company announced that they have been recognized with a 2013 Sustained Excellence in Green Power Award from the EPA.

Ken Bonning, senior executive vice president, says, “This recognition from EPA comes at a time when we are furthering our commitment to achieving carbon neutrality through a continued investment in the use and support of green power, as well as our sustainable operations strategies companywide.” In 2012, he says, the company was proud to achieve its benchmark of net zero emissions between 2010 and 2012. Now, the company is extending that goal through 2015.

The company says that two initiatives are key to their success in maintaining a net zero carbon footprint: green power programs and operational efficiency. To achieve its goals with green power, Kohl’s generates 37 million kWh of on-site green power each year, and they also purchase 1.5 billion kWh of green power each year. To achieve its goals with operational efficiency, the department store takes green measures with regards to its transportation, building design and operation, and pursuit of waste reduction.

According to the EPA’s website, this is not the first time that they have recognized the department store’s commitment to the environment. In 2007 and 2008, Kohl’s received the Green Power Leadership Award. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, Kohl’s received the Partner of the Year award. In 2012, they received the same award that they are being honored with this year, the Sustained Excellence in Green Power award. For shoppers whose buying choices are dictated by their carbon footprint, Kohl’s is a top choice.
