Chile, India to Work Together on Renewable Energy Projects

In hopes of strengthening the relationship between the two countries, India has offered to share its expertise in setting up renewable energy projects with Chile, as the South American nation is close to being entirely dependent on imports for all of its energy needs.

The idea was put on the table during a recent meeting between Indian Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah, and Chile’s Energy Minister Jorge Bunster. During the meeting, both leaders agreed to cooperate in the growing renewable energy sector. During the visit the two leaders visited Chile’s ALMA observatory and the country’s energy projects located in Atacama.

According to The Santiago Times, Abdullah has offered the Chilean government five positions for students to study at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s institute located in Delhi. He also offered training slots to Chilean scientists, engineers and technicians through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Program. Abdullah said, “We’ll start their course straight away so there is no delay. Chile will start advancing with green energy in the coming year.”

The government of Chile just passed a revised renewable energy bill. The new bill states that "Twenty percent of the nation’s energy consumption must come from renewables by 2025." According to the county's National Energy Commission, currently just over five percent of the nation’s energy supply consumption comes from renewable energy sources.

Much of India's expertise will be coming from the Centre for Wind Energy, Solar Energy Centre and the Alternate Hydro Energy Centre. Abdullah expressed India's desire to cooperate with not just Chile, but the entire Latin American region in renewable energy. He has publicly offered all possible assistance.

Bunster gave Abdullah an open invitation to visit Chile again in the near future. Both believe that this year’s International Seminar on Energy Access held in New Dehli would be the perfect venue for the two parties to continue discussing renewable energy plans.
