AMD (News - Alert), a semiconductor designer, recently unveiled its GX-210JA, a low-power Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) in its G-Series SOC family.

The dual-core GX-210JA APU is a full System-on-Chip (SoC) design and is designed to consume one-third less energy than its predecessor while at the same time delivering high-end graphics capabilities.

Arun Iyengar, vice president and general manager at AMD Embedded Systems, commented, “The advance of APU processor design, the Surround Computing era, and The Internet of Things has created the demand for embedded devices that are low power but also offer excellent compute and graphics performance. AMD Embedded G-Series SOC products offer unparalleled compute, graphics and I/O integration, resulting in fewer board components, low-power use, and reduced complexity and overhead cost. The new GX-210JA operates at an average of approximately 3 watts, enabling a new generation of fanless designs for content-rich, multimedia and traditional workload processing.”

The new APU features enterprise-class error-correction code (ECC) memory support, with integrated discrete-class GPU and I/O controller on the same die.

Some of the notable highlights of the new AMD GX-210JA include an integrated controller hub functional block as well as CPU+GPU+NB, 28nm process technology, 24.5mm x 24.5mm BGA package, 113 percent CPU performance improvement over AMD G-Series APU, 20 percent compute performance improvement over AMD G-Series APU when running multiple industry-standard graphics-intensive benchmark, DirectX 11.1 graphics support, power gating added to multimedia engine, display controller & NB, DDR P-states for reduced power consumption and support for up to DDR3-1600 1.35V and 1.25V voltage levels.

At only 6W TDP, the GX-210JA adds to the scalable offering of the AMD Embedded G-Series family, and provides engineers with greater design choice and flexibility while keeping software overhead costs at a minimum by leveraging the same architecture across the product family.
