OpenADR, the management solution quickly becoming standard in the technology industry, has just released a new full-feature specification for wholesale and retail programs. OpenADR1.0 and OpenADR2.0a currently provide automated demand response (ADR) to reduce operating costs for technical industries that require demand response (DR). The newly released program, OpenADR2.0b “Profile Specification,” will presumably begin to cover these same customers.
What is DR?
According to the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, demand response is defined as “changes in electric use by demand-side resources from their normal consumption patterns in response to changes in the price of electricity, or to incentive payments designed to induce lower electricity use at times of high wholesale market prices or when system reliability is jeopardized.” Basically, DR is a means to avert energy crises caused by excessive electricity demand.
The New 2.0b Program
The new program provides a more specialized ADR service, compounding on the 2.0a version released last August. New services simplify registration and administrative settings and include abilities such as event scheduling, price scheduling, and reporting. OpenADR2.0b will be available in DR markets and is much more advanced than the version released in August, which targets commercial, residential and less sophisticated devices.
Software professionals at OpenADR Alliance and QualityLogic (News - Alert) have ensured that the program is ready to take on such lofty goals by providing a Certification Test Tool. The tool will be made available upon release. In addition to the United States, other leaders in the technology world, such as Japan and South Korea, have also expressed an interest in standardizing OpenADR2.0b for demand response in their technology industries.
