The Wi-SUN Alliance recently forged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ECHONET to develop a certification program for ECHONET Lite applications, leveraging Wi-SUN Interoperable Certification Program, and also for products that operate on ECHONET Standards. The Wi-SUN Alliance ECHONET Working Group (WG) will define end-to-end technical profiles and protocols for interoperable home energy management systems (HEMS) operating on ECHONET Lite.

The Wi-SUN Alliance, an association of telecom solution providers and original equipment manufacturers across the world, works to develop reliable and economically viable wireless communication solutions for smart utility networking products. ECHONET standards are internationally accepted communication standards for linking home appliances made by different manufacturers. ECHONET Lite, enables application level connectivity for electric / electronic devices to connect various HEMS through any viable communication standard.

Phil Beecher, chairman of the Wi-SUN Alliance, said, “The Wi-SUN Alliance is pleased to collaborate with ECHONET Consortium by providing a communication technology that is reliable, scalable and secure for controlling energy management systems in a smart home. Both the Wi-SUN Alliance and ECHONET Consortium are not only committed to establishing certification programs in Japan but also to promoting these international standards around the world.”

The MoU facilitated the launch of "Home Network Communication Interface for ECHONET Lite (IEEE802.15.4/4e/4g@920MHz-band Wireless)” by the Wi-SUN Alliance at Wireless Japan 2013 event, thus marking a major step ahead in establishing multi-layer and multi-vendor interoperability for smart utility network devices. The Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC) selected the joint proposal submitted by Wi-SUN and ECHONET as the standard protocol for Home Energy Management Applications in Japan.

Hiroshi Harada, co-chairperson of Wi-SUN Alliance Board and chairperson of the ECHONET WG, said, “Wi-SUN Alliance, which is responsible for certifying and promoting wireless smart utility networks technology, is excited to be working with other leading industry organizations to help accelerate the adoption of the smart grid throughout the world. We believe ECHONET-Lite is an important component in the integration of smart grid services inside and outside the home and we are committed to using our expertise to help drive industry adoption.”
