PCS and Berkeley Lab Partner to Use Less Power More Productively in Buildings

Two expert engineering and research organizations that are located half the world away from each other are coming together to reduce energy usage in buildings.

Pacific Controls (PCS), a Dubai-based provider of ICT-enabled managed services and converged engineering solutions for buildings and infrastructure projects, has partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, on a project called the Building Research Incubator (BRI).

Using Pacific Controls’ Galaxy—a state-of-the-art enterprise service delivery platform launched in 2010 and hosted on the Pacific Controls Cloud—the researchers will evaluate collaborative solutions for managing disparate business processes and assets on a single platform. According to PCS, building owners, contractors, and infrastructure owners such as utilities and telcos can leverage the resources of the Galaxy Command Control Center to optimize their operations, reduce their service costs, increase their return on assets and have the capability to remotely manage them in real time.

PCS will provide funding and technical assistance with regard to integration of their products and gain insights into cutting edge research performed at Berkeley Lab. Pacific Controls will provide a global perspective to the research on solutions in energy efficiency, demand response, sensors, controls and communications for buildings.

Berkeley Lab’s brings several areas of deep expertise to the table, including energy simulation, automated demand response, advanced electric metering and communication technologies.

Dilip Rahulan, executive chairman, PCS, commented, “It is with immense pleasure and honor that we announce our partnership with Berkeley Lab, an institution that has pioneered various science solutions over the last eight decades. Pacific Controls is funding for research staff to access real time building data and access all major projects as a research partner in managed energy services and demand response.”

He added, “The partnership will strive to develop new technology solutions and standards that would help reduce energy consumption in buildings worldwide. We are hopeful that the partnership will help us and the industry to develop more effective tools for reducing energy use.”

Dave Watson, program manager at Berkeley Lab said, “Our partnership with Pacific Controls has enabled us to conduct advanced energy research with great potential for both short-term and long-term benefits to society. We are fortunate to find private sector partners that share our vision.”
