Los Angeles Gets its First FiT Solar Installation on North Hollywood Apartment Complex

World entertainment capital Los Angeles recently took a leap toward a cleaner and greener future: Mayor Villaraigosa has inaugurated the city’s first, and nation’s largest, rooftop solar Feed-in Tariff (FiT) program at Oxnard Plaza Apartments, a multi-family establishment in North Hollywood. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) general manager Ronald O. Nichols, LA business council president Mary Leslie, Communities for a Better Environment president Bill Gallegos, solar developer Christian Wentzel, and a coalition of key stakeholders who supported the FiT program.

The ambitious FiT program will not only transform the city's power supply, but also take it closer to meeting the state-mandated renewable energy level of 33 percent by 2020.

Supported by the Los Angeles Business Council and the CLEAN LA Solar Coalition, the FiT solar program is designed to encourage building owners to utilize their rooftops for generating solar power. The program enables the building owners to build solar power plants on their rooftops and sell solar power to LADWP. The power generated will then be integrated into the city's power grid.

The LADWP FiT Program is expected to generate 150 megawatts (MW) of energy—an amount big enough to power nearly 50,000 homes. This clean, renewable solar energy will help cut back on 147 metric tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing 28,300 cars off the road. The solar photovoltaic system, which has been installed in the Oxnard Plaza Apartments, alone has the capacity to generate 142,000 kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable solar energy annually.

The solar installations under the FiT program will leverage the year-long abundant sunshine to produce clean energy. In addition to reducing the city’s dependence on fossil fuels, the program is also expected to spur private sector invest and create new jobs.

“Today, we took a major step forward in creating a clean energy future for Los Angeles by flipping the switch on the first installation to be completed through the LADWP Feed-in Tariff Program – the largest offered by any city in the nation. The FiT program takes advantage of LA's abundant sunshine to spur new private sector investment that will create jobs and decrease our city's reliance on dirty fossil fuels,” Mayor Villaraigosa commented in a statement.

“This first completed FiT solar installation is physical proof that our FiT program is moving forward as we planned and we could not be more pleased to be here today to celebrate this milestone. It's just the beginning of what we expect to be a long and beneficial public-private partnership. Within the next few years, Angelenos can expect to see thousands of solar panels installed on apartment buildings, warehouses, parking structures and other rooftops throughout the city,” LADWP General Manager Ronald O. Nichols noted in a statement.

This past Earth Day back, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa officially welcomed the FIA Formula E Championship to Los Angeles, becoming one of 10 global cities to host the world's first fully-electric Formula E race, commencing in 2014.
