As Heat Rises, So Do Home Energy Management System Sales

When you’re hot, you’re hot. That goes for both the population of the United States, as temperatures are predicted to soar this summer, and home energy management systems (HEMs), which are flying off the shelves in advance of the season.

In June, a cohort of 1,000 U.S. adults was polled by Austin, Texas-based Zpryme Smart Grid Insights, which asked, “Over the next 12 months, how likely are you to buy or install a home energy management system (HEMS)?”

Although most respondents still were not ready to make the purchase, overall the number of those who are interested is growing quickly—and respondents from the U.S. Midwest were more likely to say “yes” to an immediate shopping trip. Specifically, the answers were as follows:

  • Six percent of U.S. adults said they are ‘very likely’ to purchase a HEMS over the next 12 months. This is up by 3.5 percentage points from May.
  • Seventy-nine percent said they were ‘very unlikely’ to purchase a HEMS. This is down from 81.8 percent in May.
  • As observed in April and May, adults 18-24 were most likely to buy or install a HEMS in June.
  • Respondents in the U.S. Midwest were mostly likely to install and use HEMS over the next 12 months. This is consistent with the May data.

Still, 79 percent ranked themselves as “very unlikely” to buy a HEMS right away.  Other responses, in descending order, were: somewhat unlikely (6.6 percent), “I already own a HEMS” (5.6 percent), somewhat likely (2.8 percent), and very likely (6.0 percent).

What’s more, the June 2013 survey reflected that males (7.4 percent) were more likely than females (6 percent) to buy and install a HEMS.

When looking at age differences among the respondents, the youngest group (18-24 year olds) reported the highest likelihood (8.4 percent) of buying and installing a HEMS.  The lowest likelihood (3.3 percent) was found among the 65 and over group.  These results mirror those seen in May 2013.

For June 2013, more HEMSs were owned in the Midwest (8.5 percent) than in any other region— which represents a shift from May, when more were owned in the South.  The highest likelihood for buying and installing HEMSs was noted in the Northeast (7.3 percent).  The strongest opposition to ownership (83.6 percent) was observed in the West.
