PowerMatching City II Begins to Implement Smart Energy Services

PowerMatching City I was launched in 2007 to get a glimpse of what the energy system would look like in 2030. The program was established in Hoogkerkm, the Netherlands, by outfitting homes with smart grid appliances. The success of that project has led to PowerMatching City II, with more houses and organizations involved in the project.

This time around, six Dutch companies, three knowledge institutes and 40 homes will be part of the program to give consumers next-generation smart energy services and technology related to sustainable energy choices and cost savings. The goal of the project is to collect data regarding the best energy services used by consumers. The PowerMatching City project is the first of its kind in the world using live total concept smart grid.

Participants of the project will be made aware of their energy consumption and generation with an accuracy of five minutes on tablet computers. They will receive an invoice every month with data showing their energy usage behavior and how much it is costing them. By collecting this data throughout the year, researchers will be able to find out if this knowledge will have any effect on how the consumer uses energy.

In these households, the demand and supply of energy is automatically matched within the home and the participating households in the community. By including the community at large, the research will also try to assess to what extent participants are willing to incorporate sustainable or green energy to benefit the community and society at large.

"I am delighted that today we are taking a new important step towards the energy system and the energy consumer of the future together with households, companies and knowledge institutes. Changes are often achieved through means of open innovation in which players from different backgrounds and disciplines work together. PowerMatching City is a good example of this," said Albert van den Noort, PowerMatching City II's Project Manager.

The success of the first phase of this project was recognized during the UN Conference for Sustainable Development in Brazil, Rio+20 as one of the hundred most sustainable projects in the world. PowerMatching City II will be integrating the consumer even more along with industry organizations and researchers to provide solutions that can be applied now and in the future.

The technology and equipment used during this phase include electric vehicles, energy storage, peak shaving, hybrid heat pump, micro CHPs (combined heat and power), smart charging stations for electric transport and smart household appliances. The partners include Technical University Delft, Technical University Eindhoven and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen as well as DNV KEMA, Enexis, Essent, Gasunie, ICT Automatisering and TNO.
