In recognition of these efforts, the company’s Los Angeles data center has been awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED Gold certification is given to buildings that are designed and constructed with concepts and practices that reduce their impact on the environment.

Some of the highlights of Internap's (News - Alert) Los Angeles facility that contributed to LEED Gold certification include energy efficiency, green power, water conservation, reuse of building materials, green cleaning and green pest control and green transport options.

For the Los Angeles facility, Internap established a 47 percent reduction in energy use, per Energy Star Target (News - Alert) Finder. The facility has earned the maximum number of possible points for Optimized Energy Performance in the USGBC LEED Rating System. Other factors that contributed for its energy efficiency include: high efficiency lighting, automated lighting controls, air-side economizer cooling controls and high efficiency equipment.

As part of its green power initiatives, the company chose to supplement the office area's electrical load by purchasing100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. This purchase of more than 330,000 kWh of renewal energy credits is helping to eliminate nearly 361,585 pounds of carbon dioxide.

Through water conservation initiatives, Internap reduced the use of potable water by over 41 percent. As part of its efforts to renovate the building, it also reused more than 99 percent of the exterior structural components, avoiding diversion of its construction waste to landfills.

Further, Internap utilized a green cleaning program and green pest control policy that aims to reduce VOCs, air contaminants and other harmful gases, promoting a healthier environment for building occupants. The facility is also provided with environmentally conscious transportation options, including carpool parking stalls to encourage commuters to rideshare and geographic proximity to public transportation.

The Los Angeles facility features high density, "upgrade in place" power that scales up to 18kW per rack, which the company claims is the highest in the industry.

"The LEED Gold and Green Globe certifications at our new Los Angeles data center highlight our efforts to utilize green best practices across all aspects of the facility, from design to operations and processes," said Randy Ortiz, vice president of data center design and engineering at Internap, in a statement.

"Environmental efficiency and sustainability is increasingly a requirement expressed by our enterprise customers, and these certifications reflect our continued commitment to remain a leader in data center sustainability across our nationwide, company-owned footprint, wherever possible," Ortiz added.

In related company news, TMCnet reported that Internap unveiled its ‘cloudy colo’ capabilities that designed to deliver cloud-like remote visibility and management benefits and bring about on-demand hybridization of cloud and colocation footprints within the data center.
