Schneider 'Lives Large' in Texas, Selling 18 Coolers to New DataBank Facility

Everything is big in Texas—so it’s no surprise that Schneider Electric (News - Alert) is helping a data center in the state to “chill out” in a whopping way.

In fact, the Paris-based global energy specialist has just closed its largest sale ever in North America of its line of Uniflair perimeter chilled water cooling units to DataBank's new Tier III+, 60,000-square-foot collocation facility in Richardson (News - Alert) (or North Dallas).

Schneider sold 18 Uniflair units to DataBank—which chose the cooling solution for its ability to offer more flexibility; as well as increased air flow, serviceability and noise reduction to their facility.

How did Schneider seal the deal? When DataBank was looking for alternative cooling infrastructure solutions for their new data center, Schneider Electric offered the potential client the opportunity to experience a hands-on demonstration of the Uniflair perimeter cooling line.

"We took our entire mechanical team, from engineers to service technicians, to Schneider's Technology Center in Saint Louis," said Dan Allen, vice president of Technical Operations for DataBank. "It gave us the opportunity to take apart their cooling units and critique them. It was as if Schneider had taken all the best aspects of the machines in the industry and put them into one box."

Ultimately DataBank chose to install top-of-the-line units—taking four of the Uniflair 4000 series units and 14 of the 4300 series Uniflair units. This line of perimeter cooling offers a number of key benefits, including:

  • Energy efficient cooling for low density configurations: With coated coils and electronically commutated fans, these units offer a high sensible-to-total cooling ratio and reduced fan power consumption.
  • Cost-effective solution for both CapEx and OpEx: Increased energy efficiency translates to fewer units needed to effectively cool the data center and reduce overall energy costs decreasing both capital and operation expenditures.
  • Flexible footprint configurations: The compact dimensions of the Uniflair units and their ability to control both equipment cooling and humidity minimize the cooling footprint—making the solution more adaptable to any layout and allowing more space for IT equipment.
  • Easy Maintenance and Serviceability: All front panels of the Uniflair units can be opened without special tools, and all maintenance can be conducted through the front of the unit allowing seamless access for maintenance and servicing.

In addition, Schneider offered a service advantage. With product support ten years beyond the end of its stated life, DataBank can remain confident in the long-term success of its new cooling solution.
