New Exhaust Purifier Also Brings Down the Price of Cars

A New York City-based research and development company, Ryncosmos LLC, believes it has found a way to reduce and trap the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by moving vehicles and home heating systems—cheaply.

According to Donald G. Rynne, CEO and founder of Ryncosmos LLC, “[Our] Strataclear technology, five years in the making, reduces carbon emissions from any type of internal combustion engine.”

How does it work? In a car, the exhaust gases pass the catalytic converter. Then, they enter the Strataclear exhaust treatment system, where up to 25 percent of the CO2 is captured by absorber cartridges. The purified exhaust with reduced CO2 is then emitted from the tailpipe.

In trucks, up to 40 percent of the exhaust is soaked up. In home heating systems, the results are even better. The technology captures up to 50 percent of CO2 – providing the user with a whopping 37 percent savings on gas or oil heating bills. The byproduct is a nontoxic, chemically inert material captured in the absorber, which, the company states, can be safely stored and used broadly in numerous industrial applications.

The Strataclear system will cost $400 for automobiles and slightly more for vans and trucks. It has been specially designed to include removable absorber cartridges, which replace the resonator and muffler in a vehicle’s exhaust system. This reduces the price of an automobile by up to $6,000.

The solid absorber never changes its form–even when it is completely spent—nor does it impede the flow of the exhaust or engine performance. Contained in a CO2 capture device, the absorber cartridges are simply stored along the perimeter of the car trunk until they are easily replaced at a gas station or another exchange facility.

Following extensive tests at its Program for Advanced Vehicle Evaluation (PAVE) facility, Auburn University in Alabama certified the Strataclear technology. The testing was done with a small diesel car equipped with Strataclear, which made intensive round trips on the Auburn test track at different speeds over a two-day period.

“We’re proud of our close academic working relationship with Auburn University as a result of this testing and look forward to continuing to work with this outstanding university for many years to come,” said Rynne.

In addition to reducing air pollution, Strataclear also solves the storage and disposal issues associated with capturing carbon footprints. “Currently, carbon capture technologies produce a liquid residue that must be carefully disposed of deep underground or under the ocean seabed. Strataclear captures and traps CO2, producing a nontoxic solid material with far-reaching economical and product-enhancing potential for many industries,” explained Rynne.

The Strataclear residual has potential in construction, road building, iron smelting and pulp and paper. Moreover, it can be used to remove sulfur from flue gases, in glass making, sewage treatment plants, coal mining and brick making replacing the weighty and expensive-to-transport sand currently being used with equal parts cement. Not only does the Strataclear brick weigh one-third of its traditional counterpart, but the company states that it is also much stronger and more resistant to heat and cold.

Rynne sees a strong sales environment on the U.S. West Coast. “California’s legislature passed a bill establishing the most extensive CO2 emission controls yet in this country,” said Rynne. “The law calls for a 25-percent reduction in state CO2 emissions by 2020. In the Northeast, all states, except New Jersey, have embraced the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to move gradually to CO2 emissions reduction. We’re hoping the California legislation will also encourage other states to follow suit,” he said.

“We can’t promise to save the world,” said Rynne, “but we can offer Strataclear as a game-changing alternative that will help make our air cleaner for generations to come while contributing greatly to reversing the effects of global warming. It doesn’t get much greener than this.”
