Mitsubishi Electric Integrating Echelon's Grid-Sensing and Communication Technologies into Its Smart Meters Line Up

Mitsubishi (News - Alert) Electric Corporation, a world famous electrical and electronic equipment manufacturer, realizes that future of electricity lies in smart grid technologies, which is why the company has turned its focus to smart meters in the recent years. With a goal to earn a technological edge over other brands in a highly competitive, global smart meter space, Mitsubishi has signed a technology partnership agreement with Echelon Corporation.


The partnership with Echelon will enable the Japanese electrical giant to enhance its smart meter products, designed exclusively for international markets, with the addition of grid-sensing and communication capabilities, based on Echelon's Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP) and its Networked Energy Services (NES) software. The new smart meter products will also feature Mitsubishi Electric's (News - Alert) proprietary sensing and metering technologies.

Echelon’s open standard, multi-application platforms have been designed to provide impetus to the grid modernization efforts worldwide. According to company website, its platform is embedded in more than 100 million devices, 35 million homes and 300,000 buildings, and it powers energy savings applications for smart grids, smart cities and smart buildings.

The products will be manufactured at Mitsubishi Electric Automation (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in Bangkok, Thailand and PT. MELCOINDA in Bogor, Indonesia, both international subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Electric.

Mitsubishi is going to showcase its new products at Metering, Billing, CRM ASIA 2013, which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from May 22 to 23.

Last month Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc., where a U.S. affiliate of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation opened its North American transformer factory in Memphis, Tennessee. The $200 million, 350,000 square-foot facility occupies nearly 100 acres in Memphis' Rivergate Industrial Park.
