Green Plains Renewable Energy Recognized for Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Although there is controversy about the long-term benefits of using ethanol as a fuel source, some companies are definitely getting ethanol right. One of these companies is Green Plains Renewable Energy, a producer of ethanol in the Midwestern United States. Recently recognized by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) program, it was found to produce less than half the greenhouse gas emissions that would be made had the company been using gas.

ISCC recognition is desired by many companies, not only fuel producers, since this recognition verifies that the company is doing its part to make a minimal impact on the environment – something many consumers find appealing. Even yogurt companies are looking to receive this certification.

In order to be certified, Green Plains was audited by a third party, as reported by Renewable Energy Magazine. Among the requirements the company had to meet were protection of the natural habitats by where the ethanol is produced and no conversion of forest or grasslands in the last five years.

This certification will allow Green Plains to export its bio-fuel to Europe, which should allow a much greater number of potential customers and profits. Green Plains currently is capable of producing roughly 740 million gallons of ethanol per year. News of success in the ethanol business is generally received as a victory for both greener energy and greater energy independence for the United States.

Since ethanol can be produced just as easily in the U.S. as it can be anywhere else in the world, unlike oil, the government has tried to incentivize ethanol production with tax credits. These are also meant to encourage bio-fuel producers to look at using sources besides corn for the production of fuel. Green Plains Renewable Energy still does rely on corn farming to produce its ethanol, but the company has certainly proved its devotion to being sustainable.
