5 Ways to Lower Your Energy Consumption

By Drew Hendricks

It shouldn't come as a surprise that people are concerned about their energy consumption, and the reasons shouldn't be too surprising either. As people are trying to reduce their personal impact on the earth by leading eco-friendly lifestyles, cutting down on energy consumption can lead to big savings on utility bills – a big reward in this economy.

But many people who want to go green are hesitant because they don't want to make sacrifices to cut down on energy uses. What they don't realize is how easy it is to reduce energy consumption without making huge lifestyle changes.

Going Green with Gadgets

There are many small changes we can all make to lessen our overall impact on the environment, and there are plenty of gadgets out there to help us do it. Here are some of the most popular trends in eco-friendly technologies:

1. Energy Saving Appliances

Anyone who is looking to buy new appliances for their home should consider energy efficient options for the water heater, washer and dryer, fridge, heater and air conditioner – everything down to the light bulbs in a home.

2. Solar Tech

From huge solar panels for the roof of a house to small solar phone chargers, solar energy makes many appearances in gadgets on the market today, and we've reached a point where the quality of solar panels has made even small consumer items super effective and long lasting.

3. Energy Efficient Windows

When we think about where all of the energy consumption in a home occurs, the appliances are the number one culprit, but we often forget about energy lost along with energy used. Old windows that aren't properly fitted can let a significant amount of heating or cooling out of a house, making the heater or air conditioner work even harder. There are many stylish, energy efficient windows out there that look great and can make a big difference in the overall efficiency of a home.

4. Energy Monitoring Systems

It's usually hard to tell where energy is even being used in a home, but with an energy monitoring system, homeowners know exactly where energy is being used and even how much is being used by each outlet. There might just be huge energy wasters right under someone's nose and they would never know until their energy monitoring system told them.

5. Simple Tech

With a lot of the technology out there, the average person doesn't want to invest in a huge device. But there are plenty of small things people can do, like change their light bulbs or make sure all of the filters in their heating and cooling systems are clean, that will add up to big changes.

Other Ways to be Eco-Friendly

Even though these gadgets, and many others, can make going green a lot easier, there are plenty of ways to be eco-friendly without specific technology. Lowering energy costs can be as easy as unplugging things like game consoles and cable boxes when they're not being used (having all of those items on the same power strip makes it super easy to turn them all on or off at once, for example).
