A Qualification Against Green Deal Cowboys

By Peter B. Counter

In the war on energy inefficiency, the front line is fought by home and business owners. In the United States, the Green Button program acts as an incentive for cutting down environmental impact by offering tax breaks for soldiers flying the green banner. In the United Kingdom the government has instituted the draft with the Green Deal: a program meant to make adopting green technologies into your home and business easier financially.

Green Deal participants are able to take out a line of credit on energy-saving measures, like double-paned windows, and pay them off at a rate promised to be no more expensive than the difference in energy costs provided by the adopted solutions. As anyone who has worked in an outbound call center will immediately understand, a payment option like that is an indispensable tool when trying to close on a sale for say, insulation. This is great for businesses certified to sell products through the Green Deal, but the less-morally steadfast telemarketers have been imposing as Green Dealers in order to snipe sales.

"I want to be completely clear, cowboys will not be tolerated in any part of the Green Deal," said Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker to the BBC last Tuesday, when addressing this issue of enviro-fraud. Filling the demand for Green Deal authentication almost immediately, Skillsfirst Awards introduced a new Level 1 Award to help better qualify call center representatives in understanding exactly how the Green Deal program works and being able to pass that information on to potential customers.

The qualification, called the Level 1 Award in Introducing Sustainable Energy Efficiency to Potential Customers will come supplemented with a similar achievement: the Level 1 Award in Providing Energy Efficiency to Potential Customers, which will further aid representatives and let customers understand how they are helping the environment.

The qualification will certainly aid in the initiative’s goal of bringing the fight for sustainability to the people, but that’s not all. There are a number of financial pitfalls in Green Deal that customers may not be aware of. Having this kind of certification will not only help distinguish authentic agents, but also empower customers to make the best decision for their situation.
