No Power? No Problem, with Active Power UPS Datum Colocation Facility

Aiming for a resilient and efficient electrical infrastructure, Datum, a business class data center provider, has deployed Active Power's CleanSource (News - Alert) 1000 kVA uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system at its new, 40,000-square-foot colocation facility at the high-security QinetiQ Cody Technology Park in Farnborough, a town in Hampshire, England.

An uninterruptible power supply provides emergency power when the input power source fails. A UPS differs from an emergency power system or standby generator in that it provides near-instantaneous protection from input power interruptions by supplying energy stored in batteries or a flywheel. The on-battery runtime of most uninterruptible power sources is just a few minutes—giving the data center sufficient time to start a standby power source or to properly shut down the protected equipment.

The new flagship Datum facility—designed and built by specialist firm Keysource, of Horsham, West Sussex—opened earlier this year with a customer base of managed service providers, systems integrators, and other technology firms.

All critical backup power equipment, including the UPS, was deployed in a facility separated from the main data center. The CleanSource UPS was integrated into a 2N design—meaning that two independent sources of power are supporting the facility's IT loads. With no interconnections or interdependencies, there are no single points of failure that could impact both sources. Indeed, one side can be taken down for maintenance while the full facility load continues to be supported by the other side.

"Our focus was to design and build a colocation facility that would support the exacting standards and requirements of our customers in terms of IT capacity, power, cooling and security not only for today, but for the future," said Dominic Phillips, managing director at Datum. "Active Power's UPS was a key component in helping us achieve our environmentally intelligent design, as the product delivers industry leading energy and space efficiencies. This, combined with Keysource’s Ecofris cooling solution, ensures we attain annualized power usage effectiveness (PUE) of just 1.25." (An ideal PUE is 1.0.)

"Our UPS platform offers customers unmatched power density, reliability and total cost of ownership," said Mark Lee, general manager, UK, at Active Power, headquartered in Eversham, Worcestershire. "Keysource's approach to high-performance modular data center infrastructure (MDCI) and Datum's desire for low operational PUE fully aligns with the tangible operational advantages of our CleanSource UPS, enabling Datum to set new standards in data centre performance."

The QinetiQ (News - Alert) Cody Technology Park was built in 1996 to for the consolidation of U.K. Defense Research Agencies. It has since been privatized and is run by QinetiQ, a defense technology and security company.
