The U.S. Postal Service has won as many as ten awards in the Federal Green Challenge competition for its successful waste reduction efforts across the United States.

The Federal Green Challenge competition is part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sustainable Materials Management Program.

The U.S. Postal Service has more than 850 green teams that work toward reducing its environmental footprint. In 2012, the organization saved more than $52 million by various initiatives including reducing energy and water, consumables.

It also worked toward reducing petroleum fuel use and solid waste to landfills.

All these initiatives were successful leading to USPS’ (News - Alert) appreciation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"The Postal Service is proud to be the only federal agency to implement agency-wide participation in the Federal Green Challenge," said Thomas G. Day, USPS chief sustainability officer.

The U.S. Postal Service reaches 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes in the nation. The organization claims it is the first federal agency to publicly report its greenhouse gas emissions. It is also the first federal agency to receive third-party verification of the results.

Although this service aimed to increase recycling tonnage by 5 percent over the baseline of fiscal year 2011, it succeeded in achieving an 18-percent increase in total amount recycled in 2012.

In fact, the U.S. Postal Service managed to raise its overall recycling diversion rate from 44 percent in 2008 to 48 percent in 2012.

"The Postal Service's sustainability call to action, 'leaner, greener, faster, smarter,' is helping USPS achieve tangible results in energy reduction and resource conservation," added Day. "Integrating sound environmental business practices into our day-to-day operations, is enabling the Postal Service to deliver a greener tomorrow."

These awards add to the numerous environmental honors already won by the Postal Service. This agency is the proud recipient of the 2011 Climate Registry Gold award and the 2012 GreenGov Presidential Award.

Last month, the USPS announced that it is offering a new e-waste program that offers cash for trash.
