For Earth Day, Protect Your iPhone - and Provide 'Global Releaf' to Forests

Just in time for Earth Day on April 22, a company that manufactures protective cases for iPhones has come up with a new way to protect the planet, and repopulate and restore America’s forests.

Launched in January 2011, Rokform LLC, based in Santa Ana, California, designs and manufactures a line of mountable cases and accessories for the iPhone (News - Alert), iPad and other devices. The company promises to have one tree planted for every Rokbed and Roklock case sold now through July 31, 2013, through its commitment to American Forests.

American Forests is a Washington, DC-based not-for-profit conservation organization that, since 1990, has planted more than 44 million trees in forests throughout the United States and in 39 countries abroad.

Together, Rokform and the American Forests Global ReLeaf program have planted more than 50,000 trees nationwide in the United States to date. Specifically, through their joint initiative:

  • 1,577 trees have been planted in Lassen National Forest, in the northeastern part of California, in order to restore areas that fell victim of wildfire.
  • 25,000 Jeffrey Pines have been planted In Markleeville, California, to bring life back to a forest that was severely damaged after an illegal campfire.
  • 11,127 trees have been repopulated in California’s Tahoe National Forest to diversify the composition of the forest and provide greater resilience.
  • 5,000 Ponderosa Pine trees have been planted in the southwest region of Montana in order to restore the forest’s durability and tolerance to wind and soil erosion.

"Rokform is committed to giving back, and seeing such great results from this partnership with American Forests encourages us to continue to do more," said CEO Jeff Whitten. "It’s inspiring to see the results of our contribution, and to know the specific areas where we have had a positive impact.”

“Our forests provide tremendous benefits for all of us, including clean air and water, habitat for wildlife, and places for recreation and relaxation,” said Scott Steen, CEO at American Forests. “We’re pleased to be partnering with Rokform to help restore damaged forest ecosystems. Partners like Rokform help us make a real difference for the environment and the natural world.”

In the United States this year, alone, American Forests’ Global Releaf program will repopulate woodlands in 14 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The program also will restore forests in Honduras, Indonesia, India, Mexico and Panama.

Global ReLeaf reforests areas of 20 acres or more. The actual number of trees planted depends on the type of land and the species of trees being reintroduced. Most projects will plant between 200 and 700 trees per acre, the average being 500.

In addition to buying Rokform products, consumers can contribute to Global Releaf individually or through their employers.
