Gazelle Promotes Sustainable Technology to Restore Brazil's Atlantic Forest

On April 1, 2008, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) launched the “Plant a Billion Trees Campaign,” an online fundraising campaign to support its efforts in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. And just this month Gazelle, a consumer electronics trade-in-site, joined hands with TNC to support its cause.

Raising environmental awareness of electronics trade-in, Gazelle is urging mobile users to trade-in the devices that they no longer use, offering cash in return. It proposes to contribute $1 for every trade-in that it receives throughout the month of April toward the TNC campaign, with a minimum contribution of $25,000.

The project with The Nature Conservancy is the latest activity from Gazelle for Good, a Gazelle program to promote global sustainable technology consumption and give back to the community. To date, the company claims that it has accepted more than one million trade-ins, helping consumers upgrade to the latest technology and earn quick cash.

Through "Plant a Billion Trees," TNC is working to reforest 2.5 million acres and connect more than 12 million acres in new forest corridors. In fact, every trade-in made during April will help support the restoration of Brazil's Atlantic Forest and also help provide food and shelter for millions of people, plant and animals.

"The funds raised with Gazelle will help advance our restoration work in critical headwaters of the Atlantic Forest, helping to secure clean water for a growing population," noted João Campari, director for the Atlantic Forest and Central Savannas program of The Nature Conservancy.

One of the challenges associated with a growing population is the growing number of old and unwanted consumer electronics, and this is where Gazelle plays an important role. A survey conducted by Gazelle indicated that 50 percent of respondents stated that they just put their unwanted gadgets into a closet, instead of selling or recycling them.

"Reuse is core to Gazelle's business and has an even greater impact than recycling on perpetuating a sustainable lifestyle," added Israel Ganot, CEO, of Gazelle. "The number of unwanted mobile devices is expected to outnumber the global population by the end of this year.”
