Verne Global, a developer of carbon- neutral data center campuses based in Keflavík, Iceland, and Washington, DC., has been selected as a 2013 IDG Computerworld Honors Program Laureate in the Sustainability category for implementing the industry’s first dual-sourced, 100 percent green-powered data center.

Established in 1988, and celebrating its 25th anniversary, The Computerworld Honors Program–sponsored by Framingham, Massachusetts-based Computerworld magazine— brings together the individuals and institutions worldwide whose visionary applications of information technology promote positive social, economic and educational change. The Sustainability category recognizes organizations that, over the past five years, have reduced energy consumption in IT equipment or have used technology to conserve energy and lower carbon emissions.

Verne Global currently is in the first stage of development of a $700 million, 44-acre campus on the site of the former NATO Command Centre in Keflavik, Iceland. The location was chosen for two major reasons:

One, Iceland's cool year-round climate means that Verne Global's data center doesn't need industrial-strength air conditioning. Instead, the site is equipped with heat wheels that channel hot air out and cool air in—a lower-cost option available in this locale.

Two, Iceland offers to major, cost-effective sources of renewable power: geothermal and hydroelectric.

Indeed, with Iceland's favorable climate and renewable energy resources, the company hopes to be able to save its customers as much as $100 million in energy costs—or 60 percent of the going market price—within 10 years.

Other companies also are relocating their data hubs to the region, if not specifically to Iceland. . Google has a data center in Finland and Facebook (News - Alert) is building a facility in Sweden.

"The data center industry is currently dealing with the rising and unpredictable cost of power, coupled with concerns over carbon emissions. Verne recognized this challenge and has developed a unique solution that benefits both the industry and data center customers," said Jeff Monroe, CEO of Verne Global. Adding, “Verne is tapping into the advanced, renewable power grid in Iceland, allowing us to implement a flexible solution that answers the need for both energy efficiency and cost management. We would like to thank Computerworld for honoring our work in this endeavor."

.

"Technology continues to play a pivotal role in transforming how business and society functions. For the past 25 years the Computerworld Honors Program has had the privilege of celebrating innovative IT achievements," said John Amato, vice president & publisher, Computerworld. "Computerworld is honored to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the 2013 class of Laureates and to share their work. These projects demonstrate how IT can advance organizations' ability to compete, innovate, communicate and prosper."

Laureates' achievements will be recognized publicly at the Computerworld Honors Laureate Ceremony and Awards Gala being held at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC, on June 3.
