Rolls-Royce’s has been granted the Green Ship Technology Award for its innovative Environship concept.

Tony Wood, president of Rolls-Royce – Marine, said, “We’re delighted to receive this award for our Environship concept, another endorsement for our belief that only a combination of technologies will maximize environmental and efficiency gains.”

“With a number of Environship vessels already in build, 2013 will be an exciting year, as this awarding winning concept takes to the seas,” Woods added.

The Environship concept is a design and system-related solution designed especially for cargo ships in order to help them reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40 percent, making it an eco-friendly solution among diesel-powered vessels.

The new program can be customized according to various ship types, and it includes several Rolls-Royce technologies that serve as cost-effective solutions for ship owners.

The incorporated features include a Bergen engine powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The other function, Promas, combines the features of a rudder and propeller while the hybrid shaft generator provides optimal electric power.

The vessel itself boasts a wave-piercing hull design.

According to officials, the first vessel that will have all the Environship standards is a fish-feed transporter, being built at the Vard Aukra shipyard in Norway, for the Eidsvaag shipping company. The vessel is expected to be ready by May of this year.

Featuring the Environship concept, two more cargo ships will be made for the Norwegian company, Nor Lines, as well. These will be delivered by Tsuji Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd. in China.

Further plans are also afoot to design passenger ships that will have similar eco-friendly features. In 2012, Rolls-Royce signed a teaming agreement with Italian company, Lauro Shipping, for designing new gas-powered ferries based on the Environship concept.

BAE Systems’ shipyard in Florida announced that it will build two additional platform supply vessels (PSV) for Jackson Offshore Operators, under a contract option the two companies signed in December 2012.

The vessels will include an integrated Rolls-Royce ship systems package, inclusive of a low-voltage, active front-end diesel electric system, and a complete Rolls-Royce propulsion package with Azipull propulsion thrusters.
