A Cloud with a Green Lining

The modern Icelandic alphabetic comprises 32 letters—none of them, a “Q.” So the name of a three-year-old cloud computing company based in Reykjavik must be nearly unpronounceable at home, although it is gaining lip service worldwide.

Iceland-based GreenQloud (News - Alert)—which, as its eponymous name would imply, claims to be the world’s first “Truly Green” cloud computing company—announced the launch last week of QloudSync, a new cloud storage syncing client (in beta).QloudSync is the newest of GreenQloud’s services to run on 100 percent renewable energy, enabling customers to safely and securely store and share computing data—such as photos, videos, e-books and documents—all, while minimizing their carbon footprint.

Files synced with QloudSync are automatically stored and updated on GreenQloud’s clean energy-powered StorageQloud, enabling users to readily access their synced files from any Internet-enabled computing device, anytime and anywhere with a familiar file and folder structure. Music files and photos also can be played and viewed directly from StorageQloud.

GreenQloud built QloudSync using the SparkleShare, a GPL 3.0 open-sourced project. By open sourcing QloudSync—which will run on Mac OSX, Windows, and Linux—GreenQloud is enabling anyone to build a synching client and run it on an open standard application programming interface (API)-based Cloud infrastructure like GreenQloud.

QloudSync’s backbone, StorageQloud, and its Web client feature social media sharing capabilities, allowing GreenQloud customers to easily share with friends, families, followers or colleagues any files stored via QloudSync.

Users of QloudSync can password-protect shared files as well as set expiration time limits on shared links. The management console for StorageQloud also provides customers with engaging metrics about the carbon emissions they have saved by storing their data on StorageQloud, which can then be shared on social media.

“QloudSync solves two significant pain points in data storage—tiered accessibility and manageability—while also meeting the IT industry’s need for more sustainable energy solutions,” said Eirikur Hrafnsson, GreenQloud co-founder and chief global strategist. “QloudSync changes the way that people and businesses interact with the cloud and each other by offering an easy-to-use syncing client that [maintains data] with sharable, yet secure, cloud storage.

“GreenQloud leads the cloud industry in sustainability, utilizing cleaner energy resources and highly efficient hardware to power the cloud; and builds products and services on open-source software—making the cloud easier, cheaper and as green as possible,” says GreenQloud CEO Bala Kamallakharan.

QloudSync, offered in conjunction with ComputeQloud and StorageQloud, supports GreenQloud’s goals of designing an easier-to-use cloud while leading the IT industry in sustainability.
