New San Francisco 49ers Stadium to Be Greenest in the NFL

This year’s Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco was not only the most watched Super Bowl ever, but will also be remembered by what happened during the third quarter. Only a minute and a half into the third quarter, the Mercedes Benz Super Dome lights decided to take a nap, causing a 34-minute power outage.

San Francisco, making its first Super Bowl appearance since 1995, has been rewarded for its recent success with a brand new $1.2-billion stadium, slated to open in 2014. San Francisco, victim of its own power outage during a Monday Night Football game in 2011, is taking extra steps to ensure another blackout doesn’t occur, and that the program has the greenest stadium in the league.

The team recently announced it has partnered with the Silicone Valley’s largest solar manufacturer, SunPower (SPWRA), to be the official team’s solar technology provider and supply solar panels for the new Santa Clara Stadium.

"We are pleased that SunPower's industry-leading solar technology will be an integral part of our innovative and sustainable vision for the stadium," 49ers CEO Jed York said in a statement. "As we strive to create a sports and entertainment venue that embodies all that is special about the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, it is fitting that SunPower, with its global headquarters less than two miles from the new stadium, will be providing us with its high-efficiency solar panels."

SunPower will supply the team and the new stadium with 400 kilowatts of solar panels to try and offset the power consumption during the team’s home games. Lighting up a massive 68,000-seat stadium can get expensive, and with the help of SunPower, the 49ers hope to only reduce costs but overall emissions.

"SunPower is excited to have the opportunity to help power the new stadium with clean, reliable solar power," said SunPower CEO Tom Werner.

The team isn’t stopping at just using solar panels to make its new home digs greener. The stadium will also include a bicycle parking area, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, and locally grown produce at the vending stations.

The facility will also include a charging station for drivers with electric cars, and most impressively, a green roof that will include live plants.
