2013 Super Bowl Geaux-ing Green

Football, and all sports for that matter, generates masses of fans, media attention and uproar in the US. Each year as the final game is approaching, sports lovers around the country are preparing to attend the game, throw a party or celebrate at their favorite local bar.

This year, however, Super Bowl event planners and corporate officials are not only worrying about their favorite teams victories, but also the preservation of greenhouse gas emissions that will be emitted from the football-related activities.

The "Geaux Green" program was launched by the Super Bowl XLVII Host Committee, Entergy Corporation, and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) to limit the environmental impact of the Super Bowl. All those emission related to travel by the athletes, coaches, cheerleaders, support staff and fans are being captured by a farm in Michigan, which Entergy is purchasing, before the gases enter the atmosphere.

"Entergy is committed to protecting our environment, and the Super Bowl offers a unique opportunity to showcase creative programs aimed at making a difference," said Patty Riddlebarger, director of corporate social responsibility for Entergy Corporation and the environmental initiatives chair for the New Orleans Host Committee.

Sports are the last industry that people would think to be knowledgeable and attentive of the environment, yet its efforts to preserve the effects of its own tournament prove how sensitive the issue is. If our favorite sports teams and leagues are dedicating this type of effort and awareness to the greenhouse effects, it could create a domino effect across the country that might change the way people treat the environment.

"Hosting the Super Bowl in the city where Entergy is headquartered is exciting," said Riddlebarger. "Through Geaux Green, we're assuring the benefits of the big game are far-reaching and everlasting."

The Geaux Green website is an environment-themed game for all football fans, not just those attending the Super Bowl. People are encouraged to use their passion for football as a motive to make simple sets to reduce their energy use and environmental impacts for 2013.
