Navman Wireless Challenges Thinking on Vehicle CO2 Reduction

Navman Wireless, a transport technology company based in Britain, is extending a challenge to the British Government to try and become more environmentally friendly by reducing carbon emissions.

Navman, one of Britain’s most chosen vehicle telematics provider, is trying to raise environmental and road safety issues. It claims that eco-friendly driving could save a tremendous amount of money in fuel savings, as well as reduce the carbon emissions vehicles spew into the air today, a sentiment echoed by Britain’s Environmental Council.

“Businesses are under increased pressure to green their fleets, but current plug-in hybrid electric commercial vehicles are not advanced enough to help the industry right now,” said Navman Wireless European Vice President Steve Blackburn.

Specifically, Navman is calling for the government to provide a better incentives program for businesses to encourage eco-friendly driving because the system already in doesn’t seem to be working out too well.

“The low uptake of the plug-in vehicle scheme in the commercial sector proves that it is not an effective incentive. Concerns over range anxiety, the limited choice of electric commercial vehicles and the cost (electric vehicles cost approximately twice as much as traditional alternatives) have all been sighted as reasons why electric commercial vehicles, right now, are not viable alternatives for most businesses,” said Blackburn.

Navman does specialize in vehicle telematics so it able to correct technical mistakes to reduce carbon emissions. Some of the factors it can gauge and provide feedback on are whether the driver is going at an appropriate speed, if they are accelerating and decelerating smoothly instead of at a rapid pace. They are also able to measure whether gears are being shifted at the correct time, all problems that are easily fixable.

“In-vehicle telematics make it increasingly easier for companies to monitor these behaviors and through training schemes, designed around an individual’s requirements, drive a behavioral change, which will improve fuel efficiency and driver safety.”
