GreenPeak Technologies has just announced its GP690 ZigBee PRO solution at CES (News - Alert) 2013, currently being held in Las Vegas. GreenPeak, a low power RF- communication semiconductor company, will be integrating all three of ZigBee’s networking variants, Green Power, RF4CE, and Pro into its GP690.
With this partnership, GreenPeak hopes to successfully continue to add to its product portfolio, but also offer support to its Open Smart Home Framework. With the addition of ZigBee, the plan is to be able to redefine the term “second wireless network for the home.” In this day and age, everyone is familiar with the first wireless network, Wi-Fi.
The integration the Open Smart Home Framework with ZigBee’s network variants should create one architecture, and allow ZigBee to connect to the Internet by using only one of its radio devices. ZigBee specializes in wireless networking for devices controlled by sense and touch such as light switches and the ever important remote control.
All three of ZigBee’s networking variants will play a big factor in the success of the integration. Its Green Power will allow for much longer usage because it’s battery-less, exceeding original life expectancy of the product. Green Power will also have the ability to power devices with rarely used forms of energy like motion, vibration, and light. The ZigBee Pro will maximize all capabilities and provide support for a large network. The RF4CE will control an array of home entertainment products like keyless entry systems and garage doors for a low-cost.
“There are approximately 600 million homes connected to the internet, and nowadays every connected home has on average 5 devices connected via Wi-Fi (PC, laptop, TV, smart-phone, game device, etc.). However, Wi-Fi is a high data rate solution, not a cost effective or a battery efficient solution for the maybe 100+ other devices in the home requiring internet connectivity as well: light switches, security devices, thermostats, remote controls, etc.”, says Cees Links, founder and CEO of GreenPeak Technologies.
“With GreenPeak’s Open Smart Home Framework the customer gets access to the best and most reliable RF-technology. On top of this the Open Smart Home Framework provides a context in which all the different ZigBee networking implementations work together in a smooth and transparent way, invisible for the end-customer, providing a seamless connectivity for all the devices in the home to the internet,” Links added.
