Green Citizen Aims to Make Gadget Recycling Easier for Consumers and Business Owners

Approximately 24 electronic products per household are owned by Americans, according to the producers of the famous Consumer Electronics Show, Consumer Electronics Association (News - Alert) (CEA). An increase in the electronics number is probable since the holiday gift splurge is now complete.

There is also a possibility that a person’s waste stream in their home or office increased as well. Each year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 2.4 million tons of electronic waste hit U.S. landfills.

Of that 2.4 million tons of e-waste, approximately 142,000 computers and over 416,000 mobile devices, are either thrown away or recycled every day. Green Citizen is a company that wishes to change that. James Kao, Green Citizen’s chief executive officer, wants to make recycling easier for consumers and small business owners who buy new gadgets and throw away their old ones.

From November to February, he expects his company to see a 30 percent rise in waste. Barbara Kyle of the Electronic TakeBack Coalition, a recycling advocacy group, stated that more e-wastes are a result of the holiday period. As a small business, Green Citizen serves other small businesses.

Mr. Kao’s company, as both the collector and monitor that ensures waste doesn’t end up in dumps, works only with certified recycling companies that can prove material isn’t shipped overseas or put in landfills.

For individuals and businesses, Green Citizen aims to develop a metropolitan sustainable model that provides the most convenient, accountable, responsible BuyBack, reuse, and recycling of electronics. To the San Francisco Bay Area, Green Citizen provides asset recovery, confidential hard-disk destruction, and recycling pick-up for businesses.

It also provides BuyBack at its Eco-Centers for all late model Apple (News - Alert) iPhones, iPads, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air laptops, and Mac Pro desktops along with free electronics recycling drop-off at its four Eco-Centers in San Francisco, Berkeley, Burlingame, and Mountain View.
