Coherent Completes Acquisition of Lumera Laser

Coherent, Inc. recently acquired privately held Lumera Laser GmbH, a provider of ultrafast solid state lasers for microelectronics, materials processing and OEM medical applications, for approximately $52 million in an all-cash transaction. The acquisition will help Coherent expand its capabilities and further strengthen its offerings.

The ultra-short pulse lasers from Lumera Laser offer a new quality in laser micromachining by cold ablation, a cold removal of very thin material layers, nearly without any thermal side-effects like burrs and micro-cracks. These ps-lasers allow to micro-structure any material, including materials that are very difficult to process by mechanical means. Industrial picosecond lasers are universal tools for micro-processing without mechanical force, without wear and tear and without thermal damages. To the work piece, they are completely software controlled and easy to integrate in industrial units. They are flexible, cost-effective and reliable. These ultrafast lasers interact with material in micromachining applications very similar as femtosecond lasers do; but with much higher average power, higher rep rates, higher throughput, higher reliability but with a fraction of cost.

"The acquisition of Lumera complements our internal programs and other recent acquisitions targeted at the rapidly expanding area of short-pulse micromaterials processing and non-refractive ophthalmic surgery," stated John Ambroseo, president and CEO of Coherent. "We will leverage our worldwide sales and service network and Lumera's application expertise to expand sales opportunities.  Our ultimate goal is to provide customers with the broadest selection of ultrafast industrial solutions through the combined building block technologies from Coherent, Lumera, Innolight and MiDAZ.”

Coherent designs, manufactures and markets laser sources, laser tools and systems, laser measurement instrumentation, and laser components for a wide range of markets and applications. These products are applicable in a broad range of commercial and scientific applications.
