ON (News - Alert) Semiconductor, the leading provider in power and signal management, discrete, logic, and custom solutions, recently announced the launch of its new stepper motor driver IC, LV8702V, that provides exceptionally improved efficiency compared to some products currently available in the market.

This device has been particularly designed for important office automation equipment like scanners, copiers, and multi-function printers. Driving its skilled innovation in energy efficiency, ON Semiconductor pioneered the first of its kind stepper motor driver IC that improves the performance and efficiency of office automation equipment to a significant level.

Talking about the rationale behind introducing such high efficiency stepper motor IC, Tsutomu Shimazaki, general manager of power products, On Semiconductor’s SANYO division, said that poor energy efficiency of existing stepper motors which has been utilized in a wide variety of electronics applications has been a major area of concern to the communities all across the world, and is a significant challenge to the power system design engineers.

With this regard, LV8702V is introduced to meet the challenges by offering a unique driving system that enables the stepper motor to achieve significant no-load power consumption savings of up to 80 percent and a reduction in peak motor current of approximately 77 percent. This unique and innovative solution is expected to assist the customers to develop office automation electronics that cater to global demand for improved energy efficiency.

Besides reducing overall power consumption, the new stepper motor by ON Semiconductor helps in reducing heat generation, noise and vibration to a significant level from motors in applications like positioning control in printers. Due to improved energy efficiency achieved by LV8702V, the surface temperature of the motor driver IC and the motor is reduced by up to 46 degrees and 28 degrees respectively. This overcomes the requirement for cooling fans with the corresponding cost and space savings, and improved system reliability. The new stepper motor driver IC can successfully detect the motor condition through the monitoring of driver waveform.

In addition to this, power consumption is significantly reduced by automatically lowering the current value as per to the load and rotation speed of the motor. It has an operating voltage of nine volts to 32 volts. The important protection features of the device include output short protection, step-out detection function, and thermal shutdown function. LV8702V proudly joins the company’s AMIS30542/43/22/12 family of exceptionally intelligent stepper motor control solutions, featuring sensor-less motor feedback. This product portfolio offers the designers a leading edge and cost effective performance for a wide range of applications and drive current.

The LV8702V is available in a SSOP44J package, which measures 5.6 mm by 15.0mm. The device has been priced at $6.00 per unit for bulk orders in quantities of 2000 units.

ON Semiconductor offers an extensive product portfolio of power and signal management, discrete, logic and custom solutions to help the consumers successfully solve unique design challenges in communications, automotive, consumer, computing, industrial, medical, LED lighting, power supply, and military and aerospace applications.
