Xeros' Polymer Bead Technology: A Boon for Laundry Services?

If you thought the conventional aqueous method was the best way to wash laundry, think again.

Xeros has developed an alternative solution – polymer bead cleaning – whose triple cleaning action is meant to create a cleaning medium that is superior to most others. In fact, patented Xeros beads claim to be capable of hundreds of washes before reaching their life span, after which they can be collected and recycled.

In an effort to align its branding and image with its mission of giving the commercial and domestic laundry industry a new cleaning process, Xeros has launched a new brand identity and a new website.

“The new look brand focuses squarely on our novel platform of bead cleaning in a fresh and compelling fashion. We are confident that our future customers will come to recognize and associate our brand with Xeros’ patented bead cleaning products and processes,” said Bill Westwater, CEO at Xeros.

One of the major challenges for Xeros was to explain in detail the innovation and benefits of the new technology, and officials said the new website does a pretty good job of this by explaining at great length the environmental and cost benefits to the commercial laundry industry, and giving detailed information that addresses common queries.

Company officials also underscored the difference between the traditional aqueous method of washing laundry and the Polymer beading method. Relative to using a large quantity of freshwater in conventional technology, Xeros polymer beads reportedly save heating power, detergent and effluent production by replacing the majority of that water, and produces a superior end effect.

Xeros has initially piloted and developed a system for the commercial laundry industry for rollout in 2013, with future plans to enter the $100-billion domestic laundry market.TIME Magazine has recognized the polymer bead process as one of the Best Inventions of 2010, while Climate Week awarded the company the Best Breakthrough Technology in 2011. It was also listed in WWF’s “Global Green Game-changers.”
