FirstEnergy Building New $45 Transmission Control Center

By Oliver VanDervoort

It has been a bit of an up and down year for the energy corporation known as FirstEnergy.  While the company has had a couple of distractions, including a crack in one of their nuclear reactors, they have also had quite a few positives.  One of those positives was announced earlier this week, when the company let plans slip to build a $45 million transmission control center.  The company said the plans are to build the complex in Akron, Ohio based on a 150-acre complex that already holds facilities such as an Ohio Edison service center as well as a FirstEnergy call center and an set of offices that quite a few FirstEnergy subsidiaries do business with.

Once this particular center goes fully operational, the Akron facility will be able to oversee a vast swath of operations that will take place in areas that are well served by FirstEnergy as well as a ton of other utilities such as Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., Toledo Edison, Pennsylvania Power, Metropolitan Edison, Pennsylvania Electric Co. and Jersey Central Power & Light utilities.

The company says that the control center in Fairmont will continue its job of monitoring transmissions and tasks that are carried out by subsidiaries such as Mon Power, Potomac Edison and West Penn Power utilities.

This particular move will make the company that much stronger in the Ohio and Pennsylvania areas and looks to show that the company has completely overcome some problems they ran across earlier in the year. Having a facility also seems to demonstrate that the company is working hard to keep abreast of some of the best technological advances in the utilities business sector. The company has also managed to stay in the public's mind as one that truly cares about the Ohio area and will continue to strengthen its standing overall.
