Nextreme Harvests Waste Energy with New Series of Thin-Film Thermoelectric Power Generators

A new eTEG PG8000 series of thin-film thermoelectric power generators that harvest waste energy has been developed by Nextreme Thermal Solutions. These generators have a more robust mechanical design and offer higher power and more ease of integration with common sources of thermal energy.

The eTEG PG8000 Series thermoelectric power generators harvest waste heat from thermal sources and convert it into electricity. The electricity thus produced by the generators can be used for a variety of self-powered applications in aerospace, automotive, wireless sensor, aerospace, industrial and medical device markets.

Five new modules that produce open circuit voltages of 0.17 V to 1.35 V at a temperature differential (ΔT) of 10K and output power between 2.7 mW to 21.6 mW have been included in the eTEG PG8000 Series. The series can produce 65 mW to 520 mW of power and open circuit voltages of 0.85 V to 6.8 V at 50K ΔT.

To produce higher output voltage, the modules should be configured electrically in series.

Thermoelectric power generators (TEG) are designed to convert waste heat from thermal sources to electricity as an alternative source of energy. When a constant heat source is available, the generators can provide electricity directly to a load. If the heat source is variable, it can be used in combination with batteries.

For remote applications, there is no need to use wires or replaceable batteries as a power source.

The eTEG PG8000 Series generators operate with moderate heat flux density such as the heat flux found in common sources of thermal energy like industrial manufacturing processes and pipings. Integration with heat sinks necessary to maintain constant heat flow is easier with heat fluxes in this range.

New eTEG PG8000 Series generators also feature a high mechanical strength seal ring that enables mechanical isolation across the thermoelectric device. This mechanical strength seal ring is made from Cirlex polyimide film and virtually eliminates vertical force and sheer issues.

The seal ring acts as a barrier and protects the module from moisture and other contaminants that affect the performance of the module.

Nextreme will begin the shipments of the eTEG PG8000 Series generators in the first quarter of 2013.
