EnerNOC Software Enables Massachusetts to Manage Energy in Public Buildings

Boston-based EnerNOC, Inc. has installed its EfficiencySMART energy management software in more than 480 state-owned buildings across 43 sites, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The company was initially selected in October 2010 by the Massachusetts Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) to provide sophisticated monitoring of energy usage across more than 17 million square feet of public space under a federal stimulus-funded program designed to ferret out waste and inform decisions about energy efficiency investment.

At $10 million, the Enterprise Energy Management System (EEMS) contract with EnerNOC represents nearly 20 percent of State Energy Program funding awarded to Massachusetts by the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

"As we build a vibrant clean energy economy in Massachusetts, energy efficiency needs to be our 'first fuel'—what we rely on to meet energy demand before considering new power generation," Governor Deval Patrick said. "In that spirit, this new stimulus-funded initiative will help state government rewrite the book on energy efficiency — [eliminating] costly energy waste from hundreds of state buildings across the Commonwealth."

This milestone marks completion of the implementation phase of the contract, which also included the deployment of approximately 1,300 smart meters. In total, more than 2 million data points from these facilities are now being streamed each week to EnerNOC’s Network Operations Center. EfficiencySMART Insight collects energy data from each building, applies EnerNOC’s automatic fault detection and business intelligence application to analyze the data, and combines the expertise of an EnerNOC energy analyst to deliver a prioritized list of actionable energy efficiency measures.

The next phase of the deployment, in which the energy use of community colleges, trial courts and other state-owned office buildings will be brought online, is being funded in part by the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM). Participants in the program include Westfield State College, Fitchburg State University, Massachusetts Hospital School, Bridgewater State University, Massachusetts Trial Courts, the Bureau of State Office Buildings and many others across the state.

“Overall feedback from participating sites has been quite positive,” said Eric Friedman, director of the Leading by Example Program for Massachusetts. “By implementing EEMS, we are identifying numerous savings opportunities that can be addressed by simple changes in how facilities manage their day-to-day energy use; and helping meet the state’s energy, economic, and environmental commitments.”

“EnerNOC’s tools provide visibility into the individual energy usage of the buildings on our campus,” said Mary Beth McKenzie, executive director of Administrative Services at Fitchburg State University. “Analyzing daily usage means I can identify problems and bring them to closure much quicker than I could when I was simply getting monthly energy bills and finding out about anomalies, sometimes months after they’d started.”

“This was a landmark deal for EnerNOC that put EfficiencySMART on the map as a leading enterprise energy management solution that is uniquely positioned to extract business intelligence from energy data, and a contract expansion funded directly by the Commonwealth is a testament to the overall value we have been able to deliver,” said Tim Healy, the company’s chairman and CEO.
