Cinch Waste with 96 Percent Titanium-Efficient Power Supply for Servers

Camarillo, California-based Power-One (News - Alert), Inc., a manufacturer of inverters and power supply solutions, has introduced the TET750-12-054NA, with titanium-level 80-PLUS efficiency, exceeding 96 percent. Providing a single 12-volt output at 750 watts of output power, the compact, 1U tall, TET750-12-054NA is designed for use in servers, networking and other redundant power applications.

80 PLUS is an initiative to promote energy efficiency in computer power supply units (PSU). It certifies products that have more than 80 percent energy efficiency at 20 percent, 50 percent and 100 percent of rated load, and a power factor of 0.9 or greater at 100 percent load. That is, PSUs waste 20 percent or less electric energy as heat at the specified load levels.

Using proprietary “Titanium Efficiency Technology,” the TET750-12-054NA is the first power supply unit from Power-One to be certified by 80 PLUS for titanium efficiency of greater than 96 percent at 50 percent load. Thus, less energy is wasted within the server, and less energy is consumed in the overall cooling infrastructure. This is critical to the goal of increasing the power efficiency and reducing the overall carbon footprint of a data center.

What’s more, the company claims that it is the world's first titanium efficiency power supply in a 54-millimeter-wide chassis——thereby, “setting the standard” for highly energy-efficient power supplies.

Providing a single 12V output at 750 W of output power, the compact, 1U tall, TET750-12-054NA also includes a 3.3 volt standby supply and Power Management Bus (an open standard power-management protocol) communication.

"This was a unique collaboration between our design centers in Switzerland and China," said Power-One Chief Technology Officer Alain Chapuis. "The extensive use of digital control and new energy saving circuit techniques has allowed us to achieve this unprecedented level of efficiency combined with a power density of 17.5 watts per cubic inch."

On the Market?

In related news, earlier this month, the Financial Times (News - Alert) reported on buzz that Power-One is up for sale. Indeed, FT’s Alphaville website said that “usually reliable sources” are contending that Goldman Sachs is actively seeking a buyer for the business.

The back-story here, according to these sources, is that the founders of Power-One, led by Richard Thompson, actually turned down two offers for the company in 2011 at prices substantially above the current market value—and that decision is now being viewed with regret. Past approaches are said to have come from Schneider Electric and General Electric. FT also mentioned that Panasonic (News - Alert) has been seen as a potential acquirer, as has China’s GCL-Poly Energy.

Power-One will only say that its policy is not to comment on rumors. So the information remains unsubstantiated—but intriguing.
