Renesas Electronics Introduces 32-Bit RX21A Group of MCUs

Making smart meters smarter, Renesas Electronics Corp., a supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, has introduced the RX21A Group of 32-bit microcontrollers (MCU) for smart meters with advanced functionality.

Smart Meters are being deployed by many nationwide and internationally. When an outage occurs, smart meters allow rapid outage detection and restoration of service by a utility, and therefore cause less disruption to a customer’s home or business.

When coupled with time-based rates, they also offer users with enhanced control over their electricity use.

The RX21A Group of MCUs offers features such as power measurement, meter control, calculation of electricity charges and data encryption. These MCUs do it in a single chip function and it previously needed separate devices.

Helping to reduce the overall expenses, this decreases the number of external components needed. And facilitating common and effective system design, the RX21A Group consists of product versions for various meter models, the company said in a recent statement.

“As we continue to move toward a more energy-efficient society, ‘green’ or ‘smart’ solutions like smart meters will require innovative peripherals at the chip level which includes but is not limited to the high-precision analog, low power consumption and multiple connectivity options,” said Ritesh Tyagi, senior director, Microcontroller Products & Solutions Marketing, Renesas Electronics America. “In addition, customers would benefit from the unified set of peripheral drivers conforming to the safety standards."

Related new reports that interfaces handling higher data transfer rates are in demand these days with the recent increase of video content and large-capacity recording media. Recently, Renesas unveiled its SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) hub controller system-on-chip (SoC), the µPD720210, for use in hubs. This will facilitate connection of various devices that support the USB 3.0 standard. The USB interface standard has been widely adopted worldwide.
