INSIGHT's Supply Chain Solutions Help Companies become Energy Efficient

The California Air Resources Board (News - Alert) (ARB) has designed a California cap-and-trade program that launches on January 1, 2013. It places an overall limit on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and comes within the scope of the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, AB-32.

In the light of these restrictions, INSIGHT Inc., an international provider of supply chain planning solutions, noted that businesses need to be more efficient in their supply chains and provides tools that allow companies to design their supply chains to reduce both costs and harmful emissions.

This is an effort to help the state meet its goal of reducing GHG emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020.

The ARB program will put a cap on GHG emissions from capped sectors and those facilities that are subject to the “cap” can buy carbon allowances that have been issued by ARB from other energy efficient companies.

"Cap and Trade is similar to a capacity constraint in your supply chain network where companies only have, for example, certain capacity on their production lines," said Jeff Karrenbauer, president at INSIGHT, Inc.

Karrenbauer observed that in order to optimize the supply chain, it had to be designed for less energy usage, and companies needed to “think holistically across all facility types and activities," understand the environmental impact of their supply chains, while adding to their capacity.

INSIGHT's solutions reportedly help companies rapidly create and implement green supply chain initiatives. When companies use the software, they can assess their carbon footprint and plan how they can make better environmental decisions.

The company believes that being efficient and going green are pretty much the same thing. When the supply chain is optimized it cost reduces and profit increases. When an energy efficient supply chain is designed, the same thing happens, cost is minimized and energy is conserved, which will ultimately translate to greater profits.

Currently, energy restrictions are in vogue in Europe and shortly will be in California. However, other states and countries will also establish these restrictions in the near future.

Recently, INSIGHT was named by Food Logistics magazine as one of twenty Top Green Providers for 2012.
