The Consortium for Smart Energy Profile 2 Interoperability together with its founding members HomePlug (News - Alert) Alliance, Wi-Fi Alliance and ZigBee Alliance, recently announced its formal incorporation. Now that the Consortium has been formally incorporated, it will focus on and further help to drive SEP 2 interoperability within the smart grid sector to maximize consumer benefits. The Consortium has been established to essentially drive faster realization of interoperable SEP 2 products for the smart grid market.

In a release, Edgar Figueroa (News - Alert), Consortium chairman, said that, “The CSEP incorporation further solidifies the industry’s commitment to collaboration and delivery of interoperable SEP 2 solutions. CSEP incorporation is an important step toward establishing the Consortium as the recognized creator of the SEP 2 test plans and tools required to ensure interoperability across multiple communications technologies."

The Consortium, which was launched in October 2011, will focus on developing and managing a certification test suite that will effectively validate and ensure wired and wireless device interoperability. By ensuring robust interoperability, the Smart Grid environment, which includes utilities, service providers, product vendors and consumers, will benefit immensely from interoperability between applications and devices. This will also serve to further drive availability of products and services within the smart grid market.

The Consortium will ensure interoperability validation for products such as thermostats, appliances, electric meters, gateways, electric vehicles among a host of other devices currently used within the smart grid market.

The Consortium has also completed its first interoperability Plugfest to validate interoperability of products from HomePlug, Wi-Fi or ZigBee communications. As the Consortium moves ahead in its certification program, it is expecting to carry out more Plugfests.

SEP 2 is an Internet Protocol-based application layer that is a result of collaborative development efforts between ZigBee Alliance, Wi-Fi Alliance (News - Alert), HomePlug Alliance, as well as other organizations.
