Tesla Announces Early Delivery of Model S Electric Cars

Electric car manufacturer, Tesla plans to release the most expensive version of its Model S electric car starting June 22, which is about a month ahead of the originally scheduled launch.

Morgan Stanley has predicted that Tesla will sell 3,000 cars this year, 16,000 next year and 19,000 the following year. Tesla will thus become the first American car maker to start volume distribution in several decades, even though Tesla’s market share will be only a fraction of the 144 million autos made in America every year.

This has been a good week for Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla. Musk is also a founder of PayPal (News - Alert) and of Space-X, the company that made the first commercial space capsule launched by NASA on May 21. The Dragon capsule is headed for the International Space Station, where it will deliver supplies like clothing to the ISS astronauts.

Tesla, which is based in Palo Alto (News - Alert), Calif., says that it has over 10,000 orders for the Model S, although the company will not be able to deliver every order by the end of 2012. The price range for the Model S is between $47,900 and $97,900 depending on the options and mileage range and after a $7,500 federal tax credit.

The Model S will allow drivers to personalize many aspects of the driving experience. For instance, drivers will be able to personalize both brake and steering feel. Many electric car drivers have complained that regenerative braking systems, which feeds braking energy back to the car’s battery to preserve its charge, has a feel similar to a sudden downshift in a manual transmission.

In addition to setting brake and steering preferences, drivers will be able to set suspension and ride height to their liking. For example, a lower ride height will work well for less drag and a firmer feel on a smooth road, while a higher ride works better for bumpy roads or for parking lots with speed bumps.

Drivers of the Model S will also enjoy the speed. The car accelerates from zero to 60 in six seconds. The sedan will seat five adults and can even fit in two extra children’s seats in some configurations.

Tesla also stated that they will be opening a new retail outlet store at The Westchester in White Plains, N.Y.
