Save Money and the Environment with GeoSpring

By Julie Griffin
Contributing Writer

For people who live in places like Connecticut, hot water is not typically viewed as a luxury. Even the most environmentally-conscious tree hugger in the state is probably not going to forgo his or her hot shower this morning – not when it’s 39 °F outside.

But far from blaming anybody for taking a hot shower, many people will agree that we all deserve one.

But those showers can lead to an annual bill that totals up to $525 a year, an amount of money that many of us do not feel that we deserve to pay. Additionally, we don’t feel that the environment should have to pay, either.

But ignoring the amount of energy that it takes to heat millions of showers a day is probably not what the United Nations had in mind by the “international community's response to climate change.”

Thankfully for people in Connecticut and everywhere in the world, the good people of Kentucky came up with GeoSpring, “The first hybrid electric ENERGY STAR®-qualified water heater manufactured in the U.S. that will save an average consumer $325 every year on their utility bills.”

GE, a company based out of Louisville, Kentucky leads the nation as a manufacturer that provides innovative technological solutions to everyday problems. Also, GE is a manufacturing plant that provides many Americans with jobs – jobs with fair working conditions.

How does this hybrid water heater work?

The following is the explanation provided in the press release:

The GeoSpring Hybrid Water Heater combines energy-saving heat-pump technology with traditional electric heating systems used in most conventional water heaters on the market today.

This hybrid technology is designed to absorb heat in ambient air and transfer it into the water. Since this requires much less energy than the energy used to generate radiant heat – as used in a conventional electric tank water heater – the GeoSpring Hybrid Electric Water Heater is more economical to operate.

Stephen Downer, GE product general manager for water products explains that the inspiration behind the GeoSpring was simply seeking a solution to problems that everybody faces when it comes to water heating. “Many homeowners don’t realize their water heater is the second single-biggest, energy-consuming appliance in their home.

“Approximately 50 percent of U.S. households use a standard electric water heater. If 25 percent chose a GeoSpring instead of a standard 50-gallon electric water heater, more than four billion pounds of CO2 emissions on the U.S. grid could be avoided annually – equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 360,000 cars on U.S. roads. That’s a powerful way consumers can help the environment.”

How much does the GeoSpring cost?

Amazon currently has some in stock for $1,402.95.
