On June 13, San Jose, California-based Brocade (News - Alert) received a $2.1 million incentive under Pacific Gas & Electric’s Non-Residential New Construction Program— the largest data center energy efficiency incentive in the utility’s history.
In addition, the Brocade headquarters has been awarded LEED® Commercial Interiors Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Brocade, founded in 1995, provides data center expertise across the entire network, with future-proofed solutions built for consolidation, network convergence, virtualization, and cloud computing.
Its data center and headquarters campus, completed in 2010, showcase innovative use of space as well as energy efficiency, and sustainability practices, including
- A flat-floor design (versus a standard raised-floor approach), to support taller rack configurations— providing 12 percent more space within the same footprint;
- An in-row cooling and hot-row containment design— providing great flexibility for equipment density changes—as well as leading-edge cable designs that make change management much easier;
- “Environmentally sound” energy systems that exceed California Energy Code requirements by 16 percent and qualified the company for the historic utility incentive rebate. Specifically:
Based on its energy-efficient design and operations, the Brocade data center is operating at a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2, which is considered a best-in-class metric for data center energy efficiency.
PG&E (News - Alert) estimates that Brocade will save more than 14 million kilowatt-hours each year—which represents a savings of more than $1.5 million and a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 5,700 tons annually.
“Our headquarters project is just one example of how we apply cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions to our business operations and our products,” said Michael Hirahara, vice president of Global Real Estate, Facilities, and Services for Brocade.
