Samsung Joins the Climate Savers Computing Initiative

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative (News - Alert) (CSCI), a global consortium dedicated to green computing and networking, has announced a new member of the CSCI Board of Directors: Samsung Electronics. The Korean electronics giant – the largest in the world – will join other prominent members such as Cisco (News - Alert), Emerson, F5 Networks, Google, Intel, Juniper Networks, Microsoft, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the initiative to help drive the deployment and adoption of energy-efficient technologies in IT. To date, CSCI has 680 members.

CSCI was created to address energy efficiency across all aspects of computing, including PCs, servers, networking equipment and connected devices such as smartphones and tablets. The members work collaboratively in groups that drive improvements and best practices in a number of areas: AC/DC efficiency, networking and computer power management. Within CSCI, Samsung will likely to work other members to increase the power efficiency of servers, notebooks and a range of other equipment.

“As a member of Climate Savers Computing Initiative, Samsung (News - Alert) Electronics is further demonstrating its commitment to dramatically reduce the energy consumption of information technology,” said George Goodman, executive director of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. “We welcome Samsung Electronics to the CSCI Board of Directors where the company will play an important role in helping to drive a more energy efficient and sustainable future.”

CSCI, established in 2007 in Portland, Oregon, is a non-profit group of consumers, business and environmental groups. It has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR (News - Alert) program to accelerate the adoption of energy-saving computing and networking technologies and practices for the purpose of saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Initiative provides input into ENERGY STAR specifications for IT-related equipment.

Samsung Electronics will bring considerable heft to the CSCI. It is the world's largest electronics company – having surpassed HP a few years ago – with a 2009 revenue of $117.4 billion. With assembly plants and sales networks in 65 countries across the world, Samsung is said to have about 157,000 employees worldwide.
