While many companies are under pressure to bring – and keep – costs down, on the flip side, they're also being tasked to reduce their energy usage and shrink the company's carbon footprint. While accomplishing the two – saving energy and going green – are complementary goals, few companies can accomplish it in their busy IT centers without a solution that helps them track and manage not only their use of energy but also physical space.
Data center infrastructure management solutions provider Viridity Software has announced the release of its EnergyCenter version 2.0 (v2.0) software, which was created to be an easy and cost-effective solution for monitoring, optimizing and managing data center space, power and cooling of IT equipment. EnergyCenter v2.0, which can be deployed as a direct, embedded or modular DCIM solution, features product enhancements from the previous version: changes intended to help the data center, IT and/or facilities manager more easily, cost effectively and accurately plan for and execute, expansion, consolidation, virtualization and/or cloud initiatives.
Key differences between versions 1.0 and 2.0 include:
User-defined asset grouping. Ability to group or filter assets based on application, owner and/or contact - enables users to connect physical and virtual assets to applications and lines-of-business (i.e., budgeting and chargeback capabilities).
VMware virtual guest power analysis. A way to both monitor and analyze power consumption of virtual guests helps companies find wasteful “machine sprawl” and helps pinpoint underused virtual assets.
Heat mapping: By providing a way to graphically overlay reports of top power consumers, underused servers and BTU output, companies can help visualize actionable information to streamline consumption.
Advanced auto alert: Organizations can now assign power and use thresholds and set up auto alerts for when those thresholds are exceeded.
Enhanced import/export: Import/export asset information can help IT centers eliminate time-consuming reconciliation between legacy asset management systems.
Extended data center genome database (GxDB): The database is extended with thousands of additional measured server power profiles, as well as storage and switch specifications.
Viridity believes the solution's new features, coupled with its ability to be deployed quickly, is a key way for power-minded data centers to apply the same energy management techniques to its IT assets as the rest of its facilities.
“We are excited about our customer driven innovation agenda and v2.0, with Viridity's signature ease of use, is packed with rich new features that further enhance our customer's advantage in data center capacity, asset and energy management. It is the only product on the market today that is deployable within minutes, giving rapid and continuous savings on energy costs while improving data center resilience and agility to respond to business service needs,” said Arun Oberoi, Viridity's President and CEO.
The new version will be available next month.
