Plantronics Saves 575,000 KWh of Energy Annually from Solar Installation

Plantronics (News - Alert), a provider of audio communications for businesses and consumers, announced its headquarters has the largest solar and sun tube installation in the Santa Cruz County.

Savings from this new solar installment will be approximately 575,000 kilowatt hours of energy on an annual basis.

As part of its 50th year anniversary celebration, the company is celebrating SolarDay. With the backing of U.S. Congresswoman Doris Matsuai and California Senator Dianne Feinstein, SolarDay 2011 is a day meant to educate the public on the benefits of solar energy and cost savings.

On the heels of Plantronics’ energy-saving initiatives, the Santa Cruz facility will continue to invest in environmental friendly initiatives such as installing over 340 solar tubes throughout the office cubicles to collect and redirect sun light and provide more natural light in the office.

The Santa Cruz facility with more than 500 employees has the capability to reduce the power consumption throughout the building. This solar system was fully implemented in late May and is expected to offset upwards of 80 percent of its utility bill.

“On the heels of our 50th company anniversary, we are thrilled to celebrate National SolarDay this year and share the details of our solar system initiative,” said Dolores Nelson, director of Facilities for Plantronics, in a statement.

“Plantronics is taking the necessary steps to become a more sustainable company for its employees and the citizens of Santa Cruz County and we thank those who have been supportive of our actions and future plans,” Nelson added.

Plantronics installed WeatherTRAK controls for watering its landscape, including drought-tolerant plants. The WeatherTRAK controls are expected to save around 250,000 gallons of water per year. The company saves about 300,000 gallons of water per year with the use of waterless urinals. The total savings is to the tune of 550,000 gallons of water per year.

Recently, Plantronics announced the introduction of new CS model wireless headsets. The new line of Plantronics wireless headset offers a lot of the same features as older models and a few added features.
