Harris Corporation Goes Green, Wins Prestigious Green Enterprise IT Award for Cyber Integration Center

Communications and information technology company, Harris Corporation (News - Alert), is currently in the news for going green. The company was honored with a 2011 Green Enterprise IT Award for green innovation for its new 140,000 square-foot Cyber Integration Center in the U.S.

The award was presented by the Uptime Institute and is meant to recognize pioneering advancements that significantly improve energy productivity in IT and data center operations.

"The Harris Cyber Integration Center (CIC) was engineered and constructed with high availability and energy efficiency as primary goals," Robert Whelen, vice president, Real Estate and Environmental, Health and Safety, Harris Corporation, said in a press release.

"The green design of the closed-loop system had a capital payback of less than 18 months and results in lower operating costs for the next-generation data center through more efficient cooling.”

As stated, Harris and its design/build contractor, Lee Technologies (News - Alert), were recognized in the "Audacious Idea" category for a unique, multi-zone water containment system that allows irrigation of the entire 4.5 acres of landscape property without using potable water. Irrigation water is being recovered from the facility's closed-loop, condenser water system, which is said to have been carefully designed to maintain a discharge water quality acceptable for irrigation without requiring further treatment. Also, the system is said to offer the flexibility to prioritize landscape features being irrigated while managing fluctuating seasonal irrigation demands.

The design of the center also resulted in registration under the LEED Green Building Rating System and an expected Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) under 1.36.

Harris and Lee, a U.S.-based technology solution provider specializing in large-scale data center solutions and professional services, join 10 other companies recognized in nine categories from among a record number of entries received from around the world. Entries were reviewed by a committee of independent judges.

Headquartered in Melbourne, Florida, Harris is dedicated to developing best-in-class assured communications products, systems, and services. In March, Harris and Jotron AS collaborated to pursue a $200 million Federal Aviation Administration contract for next-generation radios that will support the agency's future air/ground communications needs. Jotron has a 40-year history of supplying aviation and maritime radios and communications systems.
