The second event in the Clean Energy (News - Alert) Connections discussion series and online forum, “Value of a Negawatt: Startups and the Energy Efficiency Boom,” will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, in New York City.
(But we won’t make you wait until then to get a definition of negawatt—which is a theoretical unit of power representing an amount of energy saved through conservation or increased efficiency. The term was coined in 1989 by Amory Lovins, the Chairman and Chief Scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute.)
Solar One, a New York City-based not-for-profit green-education and outreach organization, and the New York City Accelerator for a Clean and Renewable Economy (NYC ACRE) at Polytechnic Institute of New York University will present the second event of the Clean Energy Connections series.
”Value of a Negawatt” was developed in collaboration with Con Edison , the power utility for the New York City metro area, and will highlight some of America's most compelling energy efficiency startups, including :
Transphorm, which has developed a semiconductor platform for making power converters;
Joule Assets, which creates “energy reduction asset” markets; and
ThinkEco, which has developed a “modern electric outlet” (modlet) that eliminates wasteful energy use by automatically turning off power to appliances when they are not needed.
The panel for the evening includes Zack Schildhorn, Associate at Lux Capital Management (which has invested in Transphorm); Mei Shibata, Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer for ThinkEco; Michael Gordon (News - Alert), Chief Executive Officer at Joule Assets; and David Pospisil, Manager, Commercial & Industrial Energy Efficiency Programs for Consolidated Edison Company of New York.
Clean Energy Connections brings together professionals, policymakers, investors, and academia to explore major topics shaping New York City's blossoming cleantech industry, and it provides an expert forum to share best practices and new inspirations. Topics slated for discussion will include investment opportunities in wind and solar; energy efficiency in the information age; electric vehicles; and biomimicry and industrial design.
Developed in partnership with the Energy $mart Communities program of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Clean Energy Connections is sponsored by NYSERDA, the law firm Loeb & Loeb LLP and Con Edison's Commercial & Industrial Energy Efficiency Programs. Greentech Media is the media sponsor for this series and will be hosting the live Web stream of this event.
“The topic is truly global, but a New York-centric discussion will allow us to identify solutions needed right here, such as the value for efficiency in a tenant-lessee relationship, which is a conundrum that is being worked out in major cities across the world,” says the sponsor’s announcement of the event.
“Value of a Negawatt: Startups and the Energy Efficiency Boom” is being held at the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, 44 Charlton Street (at Varick Street), New York, NY, 10014. It is open to the public. General admission is $25, and student admission is $10. Advanced registration is required at www.cleanecnyc.org.
