New Jameco Electronics Catalog Sports a 'Green Look'

Jameco Electronics, an electronic component distributor founded in 1974, published its first catalog in 1978. The latest catalog released by the company acquired a 'green look' when Jameco chose to feature the living roof on the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

By featuring the 'living roof,' in addition to new electronic kits, LED lighting, solar energy products and other 'green products,' Jameco demonstrated its efforts to propagate the 'green message.'

The catalog cover photograph displays the 'living roof' at the San Francisco museum. The aerial view was shot using a camera mounted on an 8-foot Rokkaku kite flying 250 feet above the museum. A controller that automatically panned, tilted and triggered the camera every 8-to-10 seconds was used.

"This cover represents our two important growth segments," said Greg Harris, Vice President of Marketing, in a press release. "Jameco has seen strong demand from customers designing or redesigning for improved energy consumption, and we've also seen electronics hobbyists like this photographer who are following their electronics passion."

In 2008, the San Francisco museum was completely overhauled and redesigned. The new look included the creation of a living roof. The aim of such a roof is to help moderate the temperature of the museum. The plant life keeps it about 10 degrees cooler inside than a traditional tar roof. Skylights open and shut to let warm or cool air in and out of the building.

It has been heralded as the greenest museum in the world, where even the insulation is made from recycled blue jeans.

In other news, Jameco’s latest catalog features the Large Hadron Collider on its cover. The Hadron Collider is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator with the lofty goal of discovering the origins of the universe.
