Hunaneng Power Sees Value in Going Green

Chinese power generator Huaneng Power International believes that an environmentally friendly approach will yield more than energy efficiency and a cleaner world.

During an “Internet road show” aimed at generating interest in its planned first offering of corporate bonds, company officials announced plans to equip all subordinate power plants with desulphurization facilities by 2010. The total of the planned bond offer amounts to five billion yuan (US$680.10 million).

According to Jia Wenxin, Huaneng Power International's securities affairs representative, Huaneng Power International has installed desulphurization facilities in 40 power-generating units with 14,306 MW generating capacity, accounting for 42.8 per cent of its total controllable coal fired generating capacity. Huaneng Power International will desulphurize all newly established power generating units, with desulphurization efficiency to exceed 95 per cent.

The company also utilizes low-NOx (nitrogen oxide) burning technology in all newly established units and plans to restructure existing burners to reduce emissions.

Huaneng Power International, Inc. develops, constructs, operates and manages large-scale power plants in China nationwide, with a total generation capacity of 32,107MW on an equity basis and a total controlling generation capacity of 36,624MW. The company wholly owns seventeen operating power plants, and has controlling interests in twelve operating power companies and minority interests in five operating power companies.
