Dow Kokam, a leading large-format battery system producer, has recently announced that the company will be supplying advanced lithium-ion technology to eCAMION. eCAMION is a green energy solutions provider and will provide stationary energy storage solutions for a Canadian utility project with Dow Kokam’s lithium-ion technology.

The Canadian utility project is supported by Sustainable Development Technology of Canada, and aims to integrate Dow Kokam's proven lithium-ion battery cells with eCAMION's battery pack design in order to provide three light-weight, high energy density, and 250 kilowatt hour energy storage systems. The integrated energy storage system will then be embedded at the community level and lithium-ion battery storage system will be tested by a large urban Ontario distribution company.

In a release, Jeff Kostos, vice president at Dow Kokam said that, "Utilities are facing significant challenges in their attempt to address the increasing consumer need for electricity while also integrating more renewable energy sources, like hydropower that provide reliable clean electricity but can't meet demand at peak times. Embedding Dow Kokam and eCAMION's energy storage in the electricity distribution network is an economical solution to deliver electricity when and where it is needed, meeting rapidly evolving demands on the grid."

The Canadian utility project integrates Dow Kokam's proven lithium ion cell technology, eCAMION's packaging design and the power management system from the Centre for Applied Power Electronics. The Applied Power Electronics division provides real-time control for power transfer between energy storage units and the smart grid. The resulting lithium-ion battery energy storage system enables the improvement of power availability and reliability within the smart grid network, and also supports renewable electricity installations. Dow Kokam’s lithium-ion batteries were chosen for the project as they have provided reliability with more than 10 years of proven performance in demanding applications. The lithium-ion technology is being adopted as the primary source of energy for high performance equipment in a wide range of industries including transportation, marine, aerospace, defence, high-end industrial products and utility industry.

Carmine Pizzurro, a principal at CAMION, said that, "The reliability and performance of Dow Kokam's lithium-ion battery cells provided an ideal solution for integration into our innovative pack design for the energy storage system. Our combined technologies will improve performance and efficiency of the utility distribution networks today; and enable further adoption of renewable energy sources in the future."
